While it can’t be argued that mining for metals has an environmental impact, I’d be far more concerned about the change in government if I owned oil and gas shares, which, I believe, will be adversely affected by changes in legislation. There’s a reason that oil companies have been proactively participating in carbon pricing talks; they know that such pricing is inevitable, and that’s fine by me. I don’t own oil and gas and I don’t own any other resource sector shares either… except Copper Fox. That’s principally because I don’t have sufficient knowledge about the resource sector rather than because of any ethical considerations, although there’s those too.

Two reasons that I bought Copper Fox, aside from thinking I’d make a quick fortune (caustic laugh - first block of shares bought in May 2010) is that DD showed Schaft Creek to be relatively immune from the kind of environmental issues that can bedevil other companies/locations, and Copper Fox’s enlightened attitude regarding its relationship with First Nations. So, I’m not saying there’s no reason to be concerned but I can also say I’m really not that bothered. We’ll see. One other thing is that I’m guessing that the desire to create jobs and get the economy moving on all fronts is just as strong as any other factor. There will be compromise. I would think the same if the NDP had prevailed.
