They paid for them knowing that they only had title to the top 500 feet. Their title clearly states that they have an active mine beneath the property. They knew when they bought that there was a mine below them that had a clear legal right to mine. There was a court case that confirmed the right to mine.

The mine starts at the surface in one spot and the work is done underground. Under the houses.
