You have to wonder if news like this was a factor today:

Several hours earlier, China posted lower than expected inflation figures, giving the Chinese government room to spur growth, if desired (not that it will happen, but the possibility means some hopeful traders will pile into commodity plays knowing that copper is likely to rise).

But the markets are a wacky place at the best of times. Who knows for sure.

I just hope Wednesday doesn't bring a return to the doldrums. Some sustained excitement here would be so welcome after such a lengthy malaise.
