As everyone's tax situation is different, there are too many variables to say which one is "best" for everyone. In general, if you are in the higher tax brackets, capital gains are preferable and conversly if you are in the lower tax brackets, dividends are preferable.

Of course, if you hold most your shares in a TFSA, it really doesn't make any difference!
