Over time we will see a move towards hybrid and all electric cars. However, the change over will be slow and measured. First, at least here in America, people will in a family retain at least one gasoline fueled automobile. Who wants to stop and charge up their car every 50 to 150 miles when you are going to visit Grandma & Grandpa who live 500 miles away for vacation or Christmas ( are we still allowed to say Christmas?)
Additionally, a rapid change over is not possible due to the factors of automobile manufacturing rates per year. Even at a rate of 20 million auto production per year it would take roughly 17 years just to change over the USA and Canada vehicle fleet. And of course then one has the issue of people being in a financial predicament which prohibits acquisition of a new fuel efficent vehicle.
By all means lets begin the process. But, understand it will be a slow process. The internal combustion engine will not become a dinosaur for a very long time. Virtually I and most people here, will not live long enough to see it!
