Some of the information in the article may be accurate, but from my knowledge the article exaggerates in some areas. For example, most of the water used in these plants is obtained from deep aquifers which exist all over Canada.
It is water, nevertheless, but in most cases, it would never be used for normal purposes such as consumption.
This kind of article is usually authored by groups who have particular environmental interests and understandably, they wish to emphasize or paint the gloomiest picture possible.
Granted, the oil sands aren't pretty, but relative to the pollution all over the world, they are a very minor part.
