Check out the Chevy Volt.  It is a midsized  all electric propulsion vehicle hybrid with a range of 600 miles!  The battery is good for 50 miles and then a small engine cuts in and runs a generator to recharge the batteries and run the electric motors.  It has a 12 gallon gas tank and when running in generator mode it gets 50 miles per gallon.  It's scheduled for production in just a couple of years.  Just think, all electric on short commutes to work but still highly efficient on long trips!
