I'm no oil man, but logic tells me:

1. They have put in a whipstock to force the drill bit out of the underside of the casing.

2. The new drill trajectory will be slightly below that originally planned, but into the same formation. The Agathuna is where it's at!

3. The drill bit for the last section has to fit within the casing, and that casing is surrounded by a layer of cement. They will eventually case the new section, but with smaller diameter tubing, because without casing they will not be able to control the flow once they go into the oil. I get the picture in my head of the sections of an old nautical telescope fitting one within the other.

4. At some stage production tubing will be run. How they proceded from this into lower areas of the reservoir I'm not sure. Sidetracks are a possibility.

This is only guesswork. Maybe the oilmen amongst us can either put me right or fill in the missing bits.
