this is a link to an interview with john perkins, author of "confessions of an economic hit man." this goes a long way to explain why the indigenous peoples are causing so much trouble for foreign corporations. he explains how companies like halliburton and bechtel undertake large construction projects in poor countries like ecuador.

they convince the imf to lend $1 billion to ecuador, far more than the country can afford, and 90% of which goes back to the large corporations, and the rest benefits a few wealthy people in ecuador. then they build a hydroelectric plant that destroys the rivers and displaces the people.

then when ecuador can't pay its loans, they demand that they turn over whatever resources they have (oil, rain forest.) this is how ecuador got saddled with its huge debt, so now 50% of ecuador's national budget is used to pay down debt, and the natives have declared war on the oil companies.

the interview starts at the 1-hour point, and he speaks about ecaudor for a few minutes.
