Message: Ecuador delays passing new mining law
I don't see anything in the local Ecuador papers but I don't suppose that means anything.

There was probably a delay getting the news release to them...<g>.

Actually, I would have been more surprised if it hadn't been delayed.

Exactly.

My guess is, they're bringing the language in the constitutional draft into line with the mining law. The parts that deal with property rights, most likely. If there's any discrepancy between the two, the constitution takes precedence and the mining law will have to be revised, and I don't think they want that.

Either that, or they're trying to figure out if they can push the royalties a bit higher. I could see them arguing over that, especially if the decision to abandon the WPT has already been made.

I'd like to believe that what they're doing is drafting a law that can withstand a change of govt. That would be truly patriotic of them, given the importance to Ecuador of this new industry (which we've heard about ad nauseum, but have yet to see the proof). If they can write a law that the next govt. can look at and say..."yep, that's fine just the way it is. No need to change anything there" then I'd say they've accomplished something.
