The natural wealth of El Pangui and Yanzatza begin to feel the footsteps of two giants: the mining Aurelian and Ecuacorriente. They arrived in the area attracted by the captivating brightness of gold, copper, silver and other metals.
Not in vain to the south east ridge, where are located the two cantons of Zamora Chinchipe, now known as' the great belt of minerals and metals'. The truth is that mining will transform the face of peoples and the lifestyle of people. Even there is already the first effects: divided peoples.
An area rich
Ecuacorriente seeks to extract and export the copper concentrate. Other metals also will be used but sold under other parameters.
In El Pangui and Yanzatza is planted maize, cassava, sweet potato, banana and fruit (orange, mandarin, grapefruit) in large quantities. The livestock and fisheries also are a source of family work.
Aurelian has 39 concessions in the Cordillera del Condor. Their most important assets are in North Fruit, with 95 000 hectares. With the Mandate Miner was shortened to only three concessions.
Some reject mining on a large scale because they say it will bring pollution and environmental destruction (rivers, soil, air and primary forests). Others argue that because avizoran, after centuries of neglect, were on board the progress offered by these companies: basic works for the community and jobs.
Ecuacorriente Mirador Project started 12 years ago, in parishes and Tundaymi The Guismi, in the upper area of El Pangui at 220 000 hectares (ha). Following the work of prospecting and exploration was shortened to 30 000. But only 600 ha will settle the mine and the camp.
According to company data, the potential production will be 700 million pounds of copper per year, in a belt of rocks of 80 km between Zamora Chinchipe and Morona Santiago. It is the largest discovery of copper on the planet over the past 20 years.
A year ago, with the approval of environmental impact study by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (2006) began the construction of works (camp, roads, plants for the production, reservoir ...) for the tasks of exploitation.
However, the mine has had to wage a number of conflicts with the Shuar communities and with the settlers, to the point of curbing their tasks. So what tells Soraya Diaz, coordinator of Community Relations in El Pangui.
Jaime Zurita, president of Tundaymi Alto, cree which like artisanal mining that affects the Amazon, the Mirador Project also alter human life, animal and plant. And remember that the Shuar communities living from hunting, fishing and agriculture.
The leader is clear the scene. At the top are where deposits are born important water sources.
In addition, according to experts, mining requires large amounts of liquid, which would result in a decrease in the flow to the population.
For the parish also crossed the Quimi and Machinaza that feed the downstream Zamora. At present the inhabitants never lack the liquid. Indeed, even have a key to avoid wastage, but hoses to the weather.
At the southeastern tip is Aurelian with its Project Condor, in the Los Encuentros, Yanzatza. There, studies exploration identified an estimated 13.7 million ounces of gold and 22.4 million silver and other minerals on a smaller scale.
The company believes that the opposition of certain groups is disinformation, but that the 10 communities affected by the project support activities. He assured that Aurelian assumes a socially responsible mining, with technical criteria.
Instead, Cesar Aguirre, environmentalist of Nature and Culture International, adopted the practice of a sustainable mining in the area. With stringent environmental plans, where state agencies and environmentalists closely monitor the work they do transnationals. This NGO was driving on the declaration of biosphere reserves in an area of one million hectares, between Loja and Zamora Chinchipe.
The supply of labour and works of mining cause expectation among the people. But there are also opponents.
