There were ongoing contacts between Venezuela, Ecuador and FARC for the purpose of releasing hostages held by FARC. This plan was derailed by the Colombian attack on Ecuador after Venezuela had already managed to free four hostages. Tell me that wasn't intentional.
The main goal was to free the French hostage Ingrid Betancourt who has been held by FARC for six years. That would have meant a diplomatic victory for Chavez and improved relations between Venezuela and France, something Urbide and the USA apparently don't want.
