Excellent and relevant article--but not relevant to the Ecuadorian "man in the street". They know little, and care less, about international politics/relations, FARC, or Venezuela. There is very little concern for anything beyond what directly affects them; the price of basics commodities, salaries, and time off from work are the major preoccupations in "the street". Correa remains popular, although that popularity is decreasing as prices rise and few promises are kept by Correa, with many people because they "hope" he will be different and do something to "change" Ecuador. His popularity will also decline as more and more people become unemployed because of illegal and arbitrary laws being promulgated by the Constituent Assembly, even before the proposed constitution is ratified by the people.
So far Correa hasn't succeeded in much but most seem to be willing to wait it out rather than condemn him to the fate of so many presidents in the past 20 years. That socialism and state control has failed every place it was tried has no relevance to anyone who has little history education outside hate for "the other", be it the U.S. or international organizations. Es la culpa de vaca, in whatever disguise the vaca wears, is the most common attitude.
That Correa is implicated as receiving money from the FARC means nothing here. That he has promised so much to so many means everything--there is always hope and people thrive on hope.
As for the OAS and the UN, that's a joke. Who sits on these organizations? They are controlled by political appointees who would never rock the boat that they thrive on.
Socialism will fail on it's own. In the mean time, Ecuadorians, Bolivians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans will continue suffer, always dreaming the the government is "going to take care of themn."
