Ecuador Monitors Manta Base Audit

Quito, Apr 2 (Prensa Latina) The Ecuadorian Constituent Assembly is paying attention on Wednesday fulfillment of a resolution by that authority that establishes an audit to the Manta Base, where US troops are deployed.

Constituent Assembly member Augusta Calle highlighted the need that the country obtains accurate, opportune, and technical information about if that military base participated in the Colombian attack against a guerrilla camp in the northern area of that territory.

She said carrying out that audit would clear up the insistent rumors about that US military entity's collaboration in the March 1 incidents, in which Colombian forces bombed the guerrilla camp in national soil.

Ecuadorian Armed Force reports determined that cutting edge technology that Colombia does not have was used to locate the guerrilla secret camp, in which insurgent leader Raul Reyes was.

It was also established that 10 GBU bombs, which weight over 500 pounds and are not part of the neighboring country's armament, were launched against that camp.

Thus, it is suspected that the United States supported the bombing against the guerrilla camp with logistic means, and it is investigated if Mnata, where there are logistic means of the Pentagon, cooperated with that operation.

The audit is part of a preliminary report presented by assembly member Calle that also established notification to several ministers and the military and police leaderships know about the Manta Base role and the measures to guarantee national security.

The Constituent Assembly majority voted on Tuesday inclusion in the future Constitution of the prohibition to establish foreign military bases in the country, closing the doors to the US presence in this territory after 2009, when the contract expires.
