Ecuador has decided to declare void 587 mining concessions, Energy and Mines Minister Galo Chiriboga said Friday.
At a press conference, Chiriboga said that the concessions cover 536,387 hectares.
"Those areas will return to the state. This is not an action against mining activity or private companies. This is an action against the bad administrative practices in the mining sector. Both the companies and the state must respect the law," Chiriboga said.
The affected companies have been notified of the decision, he said.
