Vale to plant 346mn trees by 2015 - Brazil

Brazilian mining and metals group Vale (NYSE: RIO) is due to plant 346mn trees in countries where it operates by 2015, covering an area of 300,000ha, Vale said on its website.
Of the total, 345mn trees will be planted in Brazil, with northern Pará state expected to receive 344mn saplings and Rio de Janeiro state another 1mn. Other sites in Brazil to receive the trees include Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Bahia and Maranhão states.
In 2008 alone, the Brazilian group plans to pump US$475mn into projects targeting environmental protection and conservation, a 26.7% increase compared to the 2007 budget of US$375mn.
Rio de Janeiro-based Vale is the world's largest iron ore producer and exporter and also has operations in alumina, aluminum, bauxite, coal, nickel, kaolin, potash, copper, logistics and power, among others.
