Basically that is the usualy pre-Christmas stock boom. 

Since this is fast approaching year-end, all the investment houses would like to see a big rise in stock prices (ususally they are the ones who are doing the buying and drive up the stock prices).  The purpose is obvious, they can claim that they have a good year and collect the bonuses built into the results of the portfolios that they manage.
