It's been clear to me for a number of years that the future of personal transportation had to be in the sky for one big reason. Governments are spending far too much money on transportation infrastructure. Roads, bridges, tunnels ... and the killer maintenance cost of it all. Moreover, for all that money, our return is terrible efficiency because 90% of people cram onto our streets and highways at the exact same time.
"Just like skyscrapers allowed cities to use limited land more efficiently, urban air transportation will use three-dimensional airspace to alleviate transportation congestion on the ground " — Jeff Holden, Uber’s CPO
To be clear, we're not doing away with roads - but do we really need to build more of them? This is one area where envrionmentalists and capitalists can hopefully agree.
We're still a few years away from flying cars becoming mainstream ... but not nearly as far as you think. Finalizing the technology will take a lot less time than figuring out the "rules of the sky road" but we are on the runway and getting ready for take off. Enjoy this video.
