Active Control Receives $275,000 Purchase Order To Install ActiveMine In West Virginia Coal Mine (
http://www.activecontrol.com/press/A... )
Excerpt from Research Capital Morning Report dated May 1, 2008:
In late February, the company announced they had sold, and were installing, a $275,000 demonstration system for a customer in a safe area of a coal mine in West Virginia. At the time, one of the potential customers, we speculated, was
Arch Coal. Arch is the second-largest producer of coal in the US, and arguably the premiere user of information technology in the coal mining industry. Our reason for identifying Arch as a possible customer is that being able to extend inventory monitoring and control, as well as fully integrated voice and data
communications, would greatly appeal to a coal mine operator that has made productivity improvement through technology use a way of life.
Arch, through its Mingo Logan subsidiary, operates a the new Mountain Laurel complex in West Virginia. Mountain Laurel began major operations in October 2007, and plans exist to rapidly expand the mine, producing some 4-5 millon tons of low sulfur coal in 2008.
Mountain Laurel may well be the site for this first commercial system. And the reason that Mountain Laurel may well be the site for use, and without MSHA approvals in hand, is that even in coal mines, there are very large areas within the mine that do NOT require equipment in the area to be certified intrinsically safe (IS). IS is required wherever methane may seep in and create an explosive mix of gases. However, in most of a
room-and-pillar mine, there is no substantial coal deposit remaining that could devolve methane.
Excerpt from Research Capital Report dated March 3, 2008:
Potential purchaser: As per usual when dealing with safety issues at resource firms, the customer is typically unwilling to discuss the purchase and deployment of new equipment, for obvious reasons. So, once again, the customer for this system was unnamed.
