Government to address mine safety issues

Posted at 12:26pm on 03 Apr 2008

The Government is expected to announce options for improving the safety in underground mines on Thursday, two years after a man was killed in a West Coast mine.

The announcement will be made in Rununga, the hometown of the victim, Robert McGowan.

Valma McGowan has been campaigning for improvements to miners' safety since her husband died in the Tiller mine near Greymouth.

The 39-year-old drowned when the shaft he was working in flooded.

Labour Minister Trevor Mallard and West Coast Tasman MP Damien O'Connor will release a discussion document on Thursday on how to improve miners' safety.

The 10 options for improving the management of hazards in underground mining will then be open for consultation.
