GMOs to Start the Next World War
By Allison Crawford | Wednesday, May 29th, 2013
The GMO debate has been heating up worldwide for months.
We may soon find ourselves at the breaking point, which could result in an agricultural apocalypse — or even the next World War...
As more and more countries pass bans on GMO products and their use, the United States remains isolated on the pro-GMO side, to the outrage of our allies.
Recent events in Washington are certainly not helping our case. The seeds of Monsanto are as deeply rooted in our government as they are in our fields, as time and again individuals who speak out against the “Monsanto Protection Act” are squashed.
After being quietly signed into effect in March, the act, known officially as the Farmer Assurance Provision, allows the sale and planting of GE seeds even after they've been ruled hazardous by a court of law. (Needless to say, once news of this law's passage became public, the people were (rightfully) none too pleased.)
Since March, there has been widespread national backlash against the law. Hundreds of thousands of people have signed online petitions calling for repeal, while major key players are trying to take action.
Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley (D) in particular is attacking the act. He recently said in a press release:
The Monsanto Protection Act is an outrageous example of a special interest loophole. The provision nullifies the actions of a court that is enforcing the law to protect farmers, the environment and public health. That is unacceptable.
Merkley went on to say:
[T]he fact that the act instructs seed producers to ignore a ruling of the court is equally troubling. It raises profound questions about the constitutional separation of powers and the ability of the courts to hold agencies accountable to the law and their responsibilities.
The senator warns this act could set a dangerous pretense.
Despite Merkley's efforts, the Senate has failed to take any action in overturning or amending the bill as of yet, and voted against an amendment giving states the right to require GMO labeling last Thursday.
If the U.S. government continues to be a road block in protecting the world from the destructive consequences of widespread GMO use, the situation may become even more severe...
World War is Looming
A few weeks ago, I wrote about the European Commission's ban on neonicotinoids — a nicotine-based pesticide proven to be harmful to organisms including bees and birds — which was recently passed and is set to take place by the end of this year.
Russia, along with a slew of other countries across Eurasia, has already banned these harmful substances which threaten the world's food supply. The Kremlin feels so strongly about this issue, in fact, that President Putin initially refused to meet with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry during a scheduled diplomatic mission earlier this month.
Putin's outrage stemmed from the Obama administration's refusal to discuss the issue of neonicotinoids and their effect on the bee population. After three hours of waiting, Putin eventually agreed to see Kerry in an effort to prevent any further rift between the nations.
According to reports by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation (MNRE), the Kremlin has become increasingly offended by the Obama administration's support and protection of GMO companies like Monsanto and Syngenta, producer of the recently banned pesticides.
Russia has been a world leader in the crusade against GMOs after also banning the import of Monsanto corn following a study showing the crops caused tumors in laboratory rats. The pesticides that Russia — and most of Europe — have just banned were shown in a detailed study to pose a grave threat to wildlife.
The study, commissioned by the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) and conducted by renowned environmental toxicologist Dr. Pierre Mineau, concluded: "neonicotinoid contamination levels in both surface and ground water in the United States and the world are already beyond the threshold found to kill many aquatic invertebrates."
According to co-author Cynthia Palmer:
It is clear that these chemicals have the potential to affect entire food chains. The environmental persistence of the neonicontinoids, their propensity for runoff and for groundwater infiltration, and their cumulative and largely irreversible mode of action in invertebrates raise significant environmental concerns.
These findings, along with a plethora of others, led the European Commission to propose another law that would make it illegal to grow or trade any plants unapproved by a new EU bureaucracy known as the “EU Plant Variety Agency.”
The MRNE states: “This MRNE report points out that even through this EC action may appear draconian, it is nevertheless necessary in order to purge the continent from continued contamination of these genetically bred “seed monstrosities.”
If action is not soon taken against Monsanto, Syngenta, and the other companies mass-producing GMOs and distributing them across the globe, we could find ourselves faced with a third World War...
Only this time, it appears the U.S. is on the losing side.
Cheers,
