Electric cars should draw their power from the road itself. Most major highways follow electrical transmission routes, especially on the main corridors. Those that don't can be wired up. Tap into that, and you've solved the distance problem, leaving battery power for local travel only.
Electric trains have been operating this way for over a century. Yes, it's easier when the contact point has a fixed relation to the vehicle, but that's just a technical issue. This is no more difficult technically than the transition from coal to oil.
Eventually you'll see this, probably with the truck fleet first. The highway system has too much sunk cost to abandon, so it will be converted. Meanwhile, fast trains will replace air travel for all but international flights, and if you need to get around at your destination, you'll just a rent an electric car.
