Message: What Taxpayers should know about the postal strike.

Before providing some facts, I believe it is fair to say that at least 90% of what encompasses the efforts of the employees of Canada Post is the collection and reading of numbers and street names, postal codes, city and province names on envelopes collected from centralized depots for the purpose of re-distributing them to a specified location.

I’ll let the reader decide if that is a fair comment and assess the skill sets to perform such tasks and the difficulty, and stress levels to perform such tasks.

FACTS

The relationship between the striking postal workers and “management” is defined in a 553 document called the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

I reviewed that document and found

5 groups of employees in 2010

Group 1 has 16 classifications with a minimum wage rate of 23.56 and a max rate of 24.29

Group 2 has 33 classifications with a minimum wage rate of 23.11 and a max rate of 25.07

Group 3 has 51 classifications with a minimum wage rate of 21.14 and a max rate of 28.009

Group 4 has 27 classifications with a minimum wage rate of 21.89 and a max rate of 37.16

Apprenticeship wage rates has 14 classifications with a minimum wage rate of 24.49 and a max rate of 27.35

The annual rate is calculated using the hourly rate x 2087.04

Vacation Entitlement

1-7 years 3 weeks

7-14 years 4 weeks

14-21 years 5 weeks

21-28 years 6 weeks

28+ years 7 weeks

OPINIONS

The majority of Canadians view wage rate and vacations, along with working conditions required skills, and competency as the main elements in employment

I have my opinions regarding the justification of a strike … Do you?

The CBA is too long and there are too many classifications causing excessive effort to manage. This implies the place has too many managers.

If I was starting over ... I sure wish I qualified to get a job working at Canada Post.
