The irony of the whole music copyright issue is the artists don't make any money from the CD's. The record labels get it all.
A friend of mine used to run a coffee shop... sort of an avant guard night spot where local musicians would play for free, either to get exposure or just for the hell of it. Worked OK for both parties since neither had much money. One day this suit rolls in with a big binder full of artist's names - wants to know what's on the play list so he can charge the "appropriate" royalty. My friend just laughed - told him to have a seat and see if he could even identify the artists being played, let alone what label they were on. It was all independent stuff like Ninja and Warp - no big label artist ever got played there as a matter of policy. Guy did a 180 and left - never heard from him again.
