Why would one bother turning fairly expensive mercury into gold using an ultra high tech method when several hundred years ago the science of Alchemy discovered how to turn lead into gold using a simple low tech method.

It's just a matter of locating the original formulae and starting batch production.

No conspiracy here -- just plenty of research by dedicated Alchemists. Study the literature.
