Elections coming, June 5th.

At this point the odds are in favor of Humala, although it's too close to really call. Personally I'd vote for him over Fujimori - not because I think he's wonderful, but because I know she's not. Lesser of two evils, basically. In terms of how it affects foreign investment, the difference is slight as far as I can tell. Humala wants to increase corporate taxes, whereas Fujimori has made some noise about a windfall tax, so from our standpoint it's probably a wash.

Peru has a long history of mining, and it's a major part of the economy, so this isn't an Ecuador outcome, regardless of who gets in. That said, if Humala wins, expect the western media to spin the "Ollanta Humala, friend of Hugo Chavez" angle, all very familiar to ARU investors, which might cause a temporary drop in Peru exposed shares. If so, I'm a buyer, in fact I already have my shopping list drawn up.

So, mark June 5th on your calender if you're looking to add Peru exposure.
