While I have everyone's attention I just thought I'd ask...
So... I'm driving my 86 Pontiac wagon - looks like Chef's in South Park, although I think his is a Ford - and the thing sputters and dies just as I hit 45 km/hr. So I roll to the curb, try to start it and it starts just fine. Runs fine too until I hit 45 km/hr, then it dies again. Rinse and repeat. I made it home by driving 40 and boy howdy, if you ever want a scary experience, try driving 40 in Vancouver. The only thing scarier is the towing fee which would have been at least 70 bux.
Normally I'd just take it to the shop, but I've had a lot of expenses lately so I thought I'd try and fix it myself. I used to do my own work so I have the tools and I more or less know what I'm doing, but this is a new one to me. I can't see that it's the fuel line or pump - that would give you erratic (or no) performance, not a repeatable failure at exactly the same speed - so I'm guessing it's the carb - perhaps the accelerator pump, or maybe the choke is closing for some reason - vacuum loss perhaps? I don't want to go into this blind, and chances are I'll just buy a rebuilt carb and slap it on, but if it's an easy fix that someone here's familiar with I'd just as soon save some money, so any clues you can offer are much appreciated. TIA.
