We may not make much money, but we sure have a lot of fun!

SHANGHAI: China has established its first inland Antarctic research station on the highest plateau of the South Pole.
Chinese scientists, who returned from their 25th expedition to the South Pole on Friday morning, said building the 'Kunlun' research station on Dome A, the highest ice cap on the Antarctic at an altitude of 4093 meters, was a "most challenging mission".
"No scientist, from any country, has set foot on Dome A except us," said Li Yuansheng, the head of the newly established research station.
"We managed to complete the main building housing a 20-bed dormitory with shower, kitchen and dining facilities, and offices, within 50 days," Li told China Daily on Friday.
China's expedition ship Xue Long (Snow Dragon) returned to Shanghai on April 8, bringing home 204 members of the scientific team. The expedition began on October 20 last year. "This is the longest and most accomplished expedition we have undertaken to the South Pole," said Sun Zhihui, director of the State Oceanic Administration of China.
"The low air pressure and temperature made most of us ill," Li recalled.
The Kunlun station can now host 20-25 scientists who would be able to spend the summer doing research work. When the second phase is completed in the next five years, it will be good enough to stay during the winter, as the life-sustaining facilities would be installed, Li pointed out.
Kunlun is China's first inland station and will allow its scientists to conduct research on astronomy, geology and global climate change, which is an important component of the International Polar Year program. The expedition team also refurbished China's other two research stations on the South Pole, Changcheng (Great Wall) and Zhongshan.
Personal Comment .: It's been discussed here how several countries are rushing to the Artic ( including Canada ) in order to establish their " rights " in view of international laws for future claims on commodities especialy under the seabed . Few are talking about the Antartic 'cause it's in the southern hemisphere and most figure , global warming will take decades if not centuries before exposing that continent to bare eyes . The Chinese seem to think differently or in any case they're looking ahead and establishing a presence as few others did . The race to claim rights there has ( in my view ) officialy there as well at the south pole . Future growth is inevitable nothwitstanding the present crisis and the acceleration of global warming is inescapable . Some see in this opportunities for trade and access to new resources , they may be right , just like the actual financial crisis represent an opportunity for a few , but for some others it's a terrible event with deadly consequences , for most it's a step back that will affect thei financial conditions for the rest of their lives . The same will be true when the ice starts melting above ground especialy in Groenland and Antartica but with far more reaching consequences . If Antartica ice melts scientists say the world will have to deal with oceans rising 60 meters ( that's 200 feet ) in very little time considering all that will need to be done once it's start melting . Hundreds of millions of people if not billions will need to be evacuated ... !!! But where and how ??? Think of Europe , Bengladesh all the islands across the Pacific and the Atlantic barely a few meters above ocean leel . Think of all coastal areas across the world here in America Florida Louisiana and the Missisipi valley , the costal area of China India , the Indus region the Persian Gulf Fill up a pot of water fill the surface of the pot with ice cubes , put it on the stove at a mild temperature turn on the heat , and wait and see how fast it goes once it stars melting . That's not scientific it does'nt reproduce real conditions , but the point is melting accelerate continuously as the ice disappear because the chilling factor of ice on the water diminishes as the ice melts and so the heating factors increase in proportion . The explanation in real terms comes from the reflection of light coming from the sun being reflected by the ice into outer space as well as the chilling factor of ice both on water and air being reduced as the ice surface and volume diminishes . Second time i right about this here , 'cause investors are people as well and if we think and talk about the next big crisis maybe just maybe we will prepare , i don't think we escape this no more then a man can escape his death but in the face of it are we intelligent enough to prepare ourselves ??? One is sure to be criticised by most trying to see afar but that's where the future lies , i don't pretend to see that far but i believe those who do, and tell us their vision of the future wich is not based on personal interest . That's what Al Gore and some others do and they are vehemently criticised by those whose interests are jeoperdised by their statements . Sounds like what happened with the actual crisis and now they're heroes whom everybody agreed with " retroactively "
