Casey, I think you are absolutely right. I love visiting points in Central and South America, but would not want to live there in hard times. If the worst comes to the worst, consider Newfoundland: English language, extremely easy access to good hunting and fishing, plentiful berries, lots of firewood except in the middle of St. John's, the climate is not usually what passes for pleasant but being surrounded by water is fairly moderate, and the people are outstandingly friendly and helpful.
