cerro casale is the huge copper-gold project that kinross inherited its half of from the bema acquistion, so i wouldn't read anything sinister into that. that project had been off-and-on again for a long time, and now that kinross is involved they are doing the developmental work for a feasibility study. they won't make a production decision until next summer at the earliest, and a lot will depend on the economic environment. the kinross share of the capex will be at least $1 billion, and if the share price hasn't recovered and the capital markets are still this tight next summer, they probably won't want to bet the company on one project. but if the drilling results are good, and they can raise equity at a reasonable price, they may be willing to invest in a project that could produce a half-million ounces of gold and lots of copper per year.
